Prominent pimples form on the surface of metal. When pimples are formed by applying tension to the surface of a metal, they are called the Inclusions of the metal. Usually pimples are also called as cast-in defects. The inhomogeneity of a metal can also cause localized stress concentration which can initiate fatigue cracks. Localized stress concentration occurs at the tips of strain-induced crack initiation. In absence of the strain-induced crack initiation, the metal is homogeneous (figure 12b) and if the dimensions of pimple is somewhat smaller than the critical length of the crack, the dimensions can be no longer homogeneous after the crack initiation (figure 12a). The crack propagates along the crack plane that is parallel to the direction of the loading. Because the sharp crack tip is at the extremity of a low stress concentration part, the critical crack length is not affected.
