Google Books (www.google.com/books) reports that the original book was notpublished until 1881 (the original copyright date is given as 1879). However, there are references at the beginning of the book to material by LauraBell in earlier versions. The earliest of these, dated 1880 (see General tablebelow), includes the story spoken by Laura as an adult, in which she is outside thelog cabin looking at it, which she then sees is built of driftwood.
The introduction from the 1880 edition gives additional information abouta loss of money for Mrs. Wilder's first husband, Almanzo Little, who isreferred to as the father of Laura and her sister Mary. Their grandfather isreferred to as their mother's father. Their mother died when their fatherwas young and his family consisted of a grandmother, a grandfather andtwo aunts.
Note: Much of the book is taken up with a discussion of the reasons for theoffering of allegorical names to the characters in the story. Multiple, Clara, and Louisa, for example, are the alternate names for thecharacter character eating the oatmeal for breakfast. Louisa and Clara meanthe same thing.
