Halloween Kills (2021)
Following a year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Halloween Kills had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 8, 2021, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 15, 2021, by Universal Pictures. It also streamed simultaneously on paid tiers of Peacock for 60 days. The film was a box office success, grossing over $133 million worldwide against a production budget of $20 million, and received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the inventive kills but criticized its screenplay and lack of innovation. A sequel, Halloween Ends, was released on October 14, 2022, to a moderate box office success and another mixed response from critics.
An extended version of the film, simply titled The Extended Cut, was released on iTunes on December 14, 2021, in the United States and Canada, and on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray on January 11, 2022.[59] This version of the film was announced by director David Gordon Green upon the theatrical release of the film, and contains \"more thrills, more kills, and an alternate ending\". Green told Collider, \"This is the director's cut through and through, but there's an additional scene that we filmed that was scripted. [...] We ended up lifting it when I became more confident of where we're going to pick up in the next movie [Ends], it felt it didn't feel authentic to where we're going to go. So we lifted it.\", referring to the ending scene where Michael suddenly kills Karen.[60] The alternate ending involves Laurie attempting to call Karen - initially unaware of what just happened - only for Michael to pick up and, upon hearing his breathing on the phone and knowing Karen is dead, warns that she is coming for him. She then takes the knife from her bedside and leaves the hospital determined to find him. The ending would have suggested the sequel would take place the same night as Kills (in 2018), instead of in 2022 as revealed later by Green. The extended cut, along with the theatrical cut, was released on HBO Max on March 18, 2022.
Halloween (2018) was released 40 years after Halloween (1978). Halloween Kills (2021) was released 40 years after Halloween II (1981). Halloween Ends (2022) is set to be released 40 years after Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982).
For rehearsals when Michael kills the firefighters, since Michael is blind in one eye due to Laurie stabbing him in the eye with a clothes hanger, James Jude Courtney wore an eye patch for authenticity.
Following the partial reboot Halloween (2018), this film is part of a sixth separate Halloween timeline: 1. Original intent timeline (John Carpenter acknowledging that the original 1978 movie was always intended to be one complete story): Halloween (1978). 2. Original timeline: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995). 3. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) (completely separate continuity, as evidence by the scene where a character sees a commercial advertising the first film on television). 4. Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) and Halloween: Resurrection (2002) (which ignore parts 3 through 6 of the original timeline). 5. Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009) (remake and accompanying sequel). 6. Halloween (1978), Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills (2021), followed by Halloween Ends (2022) (which ignore part 2 through 6 of the original timeline).
When Michael kicks the car door open, hitting the \"sexy nurse's\" hand, causing her gun to go off and shoot herself in the head, this marks the second time in the franchise where Michael uses a gun to kill someone. The other occurred in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), when Michael used a double-barrel shotgun to impale the sheriff's daughter to a door. Still, this represents the only time in the entire series where Michael kills a victim with a gunshot (albeit accidentally).
Has the highest body count of any Halloween movie. Starting things with Officer McCabe, through to the Strode compound massacre, Big and Little John, and even Karen at the end, there are at least 28 on-screen kills not to mention those that implied or show off-screen. The previous record was held by a joint body count of 20 for Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007) and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989).
Across two different timelines, Laurie has two different daughters: Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), and Karen Nelson in Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills (2021). In the end, both Jamie and Karen have a vision of The Shape as a little boy, enter the Myers house as part of an attempt at subterfuge to capture Michael and, naturally, die.
In a flashback to 1978, Hawkins accidentally shoots and kills his partner, Pete McCabe, in pursuit of Michael before preventing Michael's psychiatrist Samuel Loomis from executing him in front of Michael Myers' childhood home.
In present day, Tommy Doyle celebrates the 40th anniversary of Michael's imprisonment with longtime friends Marion Chambers, Lindsey Wallace, and Cameron's dad, Lonnie Elam. Meanwhile, after their confrontation with Michael, Laurie Strode, her daughter Karen, and her granddaughter Allyson are horrified when they see firefighters heading to the burning Strode residence, accidentally freeing Michael from the basement. Using their tools, Michael singlehandedly murders the firefighters before driving back to Haddonfield, Illinois. Karen and Allyson submit Laurie to emergency surgery while Michael kills an elderly couple in their home. An emergency alert informs Tommy, Marion, Lindsey and Lonnie of Michael's escape before bar patron Vanessa supposedly encounters Michael in the backseat of her car. Tommy and the others confront Michael as the car drives away and crashes; the driver leaves unnoticed by the crowd.
To avoid being harassed by the Haddonfield citizens, Tivoli commits suicide by jumping out of the hospital's window to his death while Laurie suffers an injury to her recent wound. Bedridden, Laurie urges Karen to help hunt down Michael with Tommy. At Michael's childhood home, Lonnie heads in alone, but Allyson and Cameron follow and find Lonnie's body in the attic as Michael subsequently murders Cameron upstairs. Allyson breaks her leg after falling down the stairs as Karen stabs Michael with a pitchfork. She removes his mask and taunts him, allowing Allyson to escape. Karen leads Michael to Tommy's mob down the street; Michael is subsequently swarmed by the mob and gets beaten, seemingly killed when Karen delivers the final blow with the knife. As the mob disperses, Michael gets up and slits Brackett's throat; he then kills the mob one by one, ending with Tommy, who is slain with his own baseball bat. Returning to Michael's childhood home, Karen stares into the upstairs window. Karen recalls a story about Michael endlessly staring out the same window, but Michael confronts her and seemingly stabs her to death as Laurie stares out of her hospital window with Micheal staring out the window.
Somewhere around the forty minute mark of Halloween Kills, I simply gave up trying to wrap my mind around what David Gordon Green and team were attempting with this trainwreck. Underneath the barrage of absurdly gory kills and tacked-on mythology revisions, it's clear that this middle entry has no idea what to do or where to go. Almost entirely unnecessary. If anything, this sequel needed to be tightened, all killer and no filler, but it's a mess of a narrative, spinning in circles as it tries to conjure up something relevant for audiences to latch onto.
extremely funny how this movie explicitly reminds you that michael myers really only killed three people on halloween night in the 1978 original, before having him genocide the entire town of haddonfield in this one 59ce067264
