Create citation alert 0957-0233/8/12/1480 Abstract 3D scanning particle image velocimetry (SPIV) provides particle images in a large set of parallel light-sheet planes using a rapid scanning light-sheet which samples the flow in depth from which the three-dimensional flow field can be reconstructed in the scanned volume. Together with a digital high-speed video technique and a high-speed rotating drum scanner for 3D beam scanning, first 3D SPIV measurements were carried out in a motored model engine with a transparent cylinder and piston crown. Attention was focused on the generation of small-scale structures during compression strokes. Using a spatial cross-correlation of particle images in the overlapping sheets, the 3D flow field could be recovered from the sheet-wise tomographic recorded flow volume. This demonstrates the potential of 3D SPIV in engine flows since 3D information can be obtained from a single view and therefore the method can be applied in actual research engines already in use without any additional modification. The first results of the feasibility study have shown complex flow at the very end of compression which is characterized here by meandering monopolar and dipolar vortices within the main swirling flow which interact with the centre. It is suggested that the observed vortex splitting and shearing is an important contribution to the creation of turbulence.

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) appears today as a prospective tool for engine study. Even if recent works have demonstrated the feasibility of multi-cycle LES, they have also pointed out a lack of detailed experimental data for validation as well as for boundary condition definition. The acquisition of such experimental data would require dedicated experimental set-ups. Nevertheless, in future industrial applications, unconditional dedicated experimental set-ups will not be the main stream. To overcome this difficulty, a methodology is proposed using system simulation to define fluid boundary conditions (crank-resolved intake/exhaust pressures and temperatures) and wall temperatures. The methodology combines system simulation for the whole experimental set-up and LES for the flow in the combustion chamber as well as a part of the intake and exhaust ducts. System simulation provides the crank-resolved temperature and pressure traces at the LES mesh inlet and outlet. LES results are compared to experimental measurements obtained on the corresponding optical single-cylinder engine under motored operation. For this purpose, statistical analysis over several consecutive LES engine cycles is performed to compare numerical results with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The ability of the developed methodology to capture the in-cylinder cycle-to-cycle flow variations in a motored engine is demonstrated. This result points out the potential of LES to analyse cycle-to-cycle variations observed in spark-ignition engines.
An experimental study has been carried out to examine the influence of ring tan load and piston skirt modifications on piston assembly friction under motored engine conditions for initial temperatures of -20, 0 and 30°C and motoring speeds within the range 400 to 2000 rev/min. The study has been carried out using the block, crankshaft and pistons of a 2.4I, 4 cylinder diesel engine with a bore and stroke of 89.9mm and 94.6mm respectively. The pistons examined are typical of current designs for light duty diesels. A range of ring pack and piston skirt modifications have been tested, in each case as part of a complete piston assembly. The first changes produced reductions in fmep of between 5% and 38%. The reduction was due to improved skirt and ring pack designs in equal measure, each giving improvements of up to 20%. From this baseline eliminating the tan load of the piston rings was projected to give a further reduction in fmep of between 10% and 20%. Increasing the piston diametric clearances by close to the difference between minimum and maximum grade clearance gave smaller improvements of between 2% and 10% relative to the baseline, and reducing skirt roughness to perfectly smooth gave a projected reduction of typically 4%, and more at low oil viscosities.
A stabilizing observer-based control algorithm for an in-wheel-motored vehicle is proposed, which generates direct yaw moment to compensate for the state deviations. The control scheme is based on a fuzzy rule-based body slip angle (beta) observer. In the design strategy of the fuzzy observer, the vehicle dynamics is represented by Takagi-Sugeno-like fuzzy models. Initially, local equivalent vehicle models are built using the linear approximations of vehicle dynamics for low and high lateral acceleration operating regimes, respectively. The optimal beta observer is then designed for each local model using Kalman filter theory. Finally, local observers are combined to form the overall control system by using fuzzy rules. These fuzzy rules represent the qualitative relationships among the variables associated with the nonlinear and uncertain nature of vehicle dynamics, such as tire force saturation and the influence of road adherence. An adaptation mechanism for the fuzzy membership functions has been incorporated to improve the accuracy and performance of the system.
