After Kal Ho Naa Ho, Khan joined director Rakesh Roshan in the romantic comedy Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). The film was a commercial success, and was one of the most expensive Hindi films of that year. Khan played the character of Sajid Khan, a man who runs a wedding planning service and a travel agency, and who helps the characters of the film. Khan was drawn to the project because of the chance to work with his friends, Sonu Nigam and Anil Kapoor. The trio frequently sang duets for the film, for which they received a Filmfare nomination as Best Male Playback Singer.
The film's title was Kal Ho Naa Ho (2001), a Hindi phrase used for a person who is addicted to alcohol. The film's story revolves around the life of the title character (Khan), who has the habit of drinking up to 10 litres of beer on any given day. An assortment of characters visit his rented room in Varanasi, and after the first few days, a doctor prescribes him a drug to help him kick his habit. After taking the prescribed drug, Khan is visited by his girlfriend and her father, who tells him that he plans to marry her. In a short time, Khan changes his mind and makes a confession to his lover, before fleeing to a new house in Ponda. Confronting his family about his addiction, he is allowed to live in peace for a few days. Subsequently, he begins to drink again and soon is arrested for possessing firearms.
