He has been a controversial figure in the field of China studies. As an amateur scholar in the 1960s, he founded the International Herald Tribune's Chinese service and then co-founded, with Paul Y. Teiang and Kenneth J. De Medeiros, the Ancient China InternetTM project, the first academic Chinese-English language Internet project. Under his guidance, the project published several hundred Chinese language and English language articles on the history of China from the Han Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty from 1995 to 1999. His history of China has been published in other books including Records of the Grand Historian, New Century Book and The Odes and Images of Confucianism.
In 2007, Menzies published The Lost Empire of Atlantis, which stated that China was responsible for its own development until the 1st century BC and then for covering up knowledge of its existence for more than 1,000 years. The book states that the existence of an ancient empire of the "Minus" or Fusang civilization, which at its height covered a massive area of Central and South America, as well as Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, was kept secret by the Han Chinese. Similarly, the Minoan and Olmec civilizations, in addition to many other high civilizations throughout history, were all ruled from the lost city of Fusang. Atlantis also was the hub of the venus-like World Tree.6 According to Menzies, Fusang and Atlantis-Minos were mere names for the same lost and forgotten continent. Basing its argument on current research in genetics, paleoanthropology, archaeology, and astronomy,
The book was attacked by historians as containing not enough evidence to back its case.7 Many criticized Menzies as a lack of formal academic background.8 Following several debates with historian Daniel W. Yergin, Menzies apologized for his lack of scientific knowledge, and was put on a peer-review program to monitor his writing. d2c66b5586
