The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the discipline of criminology as a social science, focusing on social and personality psychology. The course is organized so as to build the students’ understanding of the role of criminology in society and the role of criminology in their own lives. The materials that are covered in the course include the study of the body of criminological knowledge and theory, the study of the crime problem, the study of social problems and the role of criminology in solving them, the study of the offenders in their own right and the study of the criminal justice system, including the police, courts, corrections, and other justice-related agencies. The course will also include a study of the media, focusing on how the media might influence the public perception of crime, law and order, and the criminal justice system. Due to the broad scope of the course, students will be responsible for their own time for such assignments as reading the assigned material and reading any appropriate literature that may be helpful in understanding various topics. This course will introduce students to the field of forensic accounting. A brief history of accountancy and the role of forensic accounting will be covered. Students will learn about the role and importance of forensic accounting and how forensic accountants play a critical role in criminal investigations and litigation. Students will gain an understanding of the forensic specialist’s skills and knowledge base that is critical to understanding the role and utility of forensic accounting in the execution of a successful investigation. This course is designed to help students understand the characteristics of effective leadership and policy implementation in the field of criminal justice. Students will also have the opportunity to analyze ethical dilemmas commonly confronted in criminal justice work. [ 4 cr. ]
This course will introduce students to interpretive and feminist criminology. We will focus on the radical transformation of criminology, which is manifested in the work of feminist criminologists. This course will provide a critical discussion of criminology’s original attempts to control crime and society and of the current focus on criminology as a discipline that claims to represent the interests of women in society and supports the feminist goals of sex equality, women’s rights, and social justice.
