Admittedly, not all software is going to be licensed this way, but I think this is really a case where the dongle approach is as good or better than the licensing model that is currently in use.
Just because a licensing model has its limitations doesn't mean there aren't valid uses for it. If you're a software developer and you need to ensure that someone can't play with your software without paying you, the dongle licensing structure is the way to go.
Ive got a license key from the get go. From the license file it looks like i would be able to add the licence file to any registered dongle and have it work (regardless of version), but nothing in the installer window says you need to enter a licence key.
Ive also got the Wibu box, and it seems to work with no problems. I assume this is what the serial number protector is using. Just wondered if I can use the Wibu box to register the 6.0.7 licence, and how I would go about doing that.
They are not stealing your software they are copying your physical dongle. If they remove your dongle from a new copy of software they are not going to be able to copy your work, same would happen if they cut out your dongle from your product, how is that any different to them?
Ive used the serial number protector from the get go. Its only after the dongle is registered that it sticks the serial number on the dongle. I dont remember any compliance or registration dialog.
And as far as i can tell it doesnt stop you doing anything else just not copying the dongle. Bit of a noob question. I downloaded the 6.0.7 version and whilst it looked like a serial number protector i wasnt sure as it had a licensing license box in the rar file. How would I go about adding the 6.0.7 dongle to an existing installation.
I use the dongle from http://www.wibu.com/products/labs/licensing/ for my own personal software. (I haven't been able to figure out how to encrypt the communications between the dongle and the software).
You have some great reasons why it doesn't work, but I think it's not as simple as the dongle model. I did not think that a license server was required to make it work. I have never heard of a license server and I have been running MATLAB for many years. 827ec27edc
